A Campfire, a Creature and Ninja Cows

Gristmill with waterfall 2Season Two of The Walking Dead ends with the shell-shocked band of survivors huddled around a fire; the flickering light shows the remains of stone walls in the background. This scene contains one of my favorite lines from the series. Rick, finally tiring of all of the complaints from the others, tells them “If you’re stayin’ – this isn’t a democracy anymore.” Finally! Way to grow a pair Rick!

This scene was filmed at the remains of an old gristmill that is located on privately-owned property; a gate blocks entry to the site proper. However, the owners do allow entry – for a fee. They have problems with people climbing over the gate and fence to get inside.  I would like to go on record here as saying that trespassing is Not Cool. Don’t do it. Just don’t.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe first went to this location on Saturday and there were people everywhere so we left. On a whim, we went back on Sunday and were the only ones there. The owners are friendly folks and took the time to give us the history of the property and the gristmill; they even took our picture by the remains of the campfire. They also gave us plenty of time to roam around and take pictures on our own. I wish that I could give them a proper shoutout here, but alas, I have forgotten their last name. I didn’t write it down because surely I would remember it. Yeah, right.

Things didn’t get weird until we left and began the journey to our next destination. A long wooden fence paralleled the road and I noticed a… um… well, a creature sitting on it. I stared because I had never seen anything quite like it – at least not in the wild. I finally asked my hubby if there were any lemurs in the area, knowing that the answer was “no.” I convinced him to turn around and go back and fortunately, the creature was still there. At least the hubby wouldn’t think that I had gone nuts. Well, no nuttier than usual anyway. The creature’s body was the size of a large house cat and it had a fluffy tail that was at least a foot in length with subtle stripes. It watched us for a moment before apparently deciding that we were boring; it then scampered off. I was so busy trying to figure out what it was that I didn’t take a picture! We finally decided that it was some type of squirrel that we had never seen before, but I’m still not convinced. I’m a country girl, so I know my squirrels. Eastern Gray Squirrels and Fox Squirrels are common in this area and it definitely wasn’t either of those. So, if you know of any sort of large lemur/squirrel-type creature that may be on the loose in Georgia, please send me a picture!

And the ninja cows? Just beyond the mystery creature, a wooded area crowded the roadside and we noticed something moving in the shadows. It turned out to be a herd of cows. But not just any cows; these were obviously ninjas – the legendary masters of stealth. When a ninja cow strikes a muffled “moo” will be the last thing you hear…

Yeah, conversations frequently get strange when I’m involved.

Please stop by again tomorrow – I’ll be discussing Grantville and the return of Morgan. (No ninja cows. I promise!)
