Barbie Beach

When taking the road less travelled you can come across some amazing roadside oddities. Well, “amazing” may be an overstatement; let’s go with “entertaining” instead. Had it not been for our tour of The Walking Dead filming locations, we would never have known about this gem:

??????????????????????

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the sign does indeed say “Barbie Beach.” This roadside delight is located in the tiny town of Turin, Georgia. (Bossy Poots on the navigation app insisted on pronouncing it as “Urine.”) The Beach is the brain child – or maybe the brain fart? – of Lynda and Steve Quick. The power company destroyed their climbing roses when clearing the right of way, so rather than leave the spot bare, they bought ten naked dolls at Goodwill and Barbie Beach was born. Well, duh. Of course they did.

The scene at Barbie Beach changes on a regular basis. It was rather sedate when we saw it – a rather tasteful, if tacky, Memorial Day tribute.

However, it is not always so calm. Click HERE for more information and pictures.

The special effects crew of The Walking Dead has given the Quicks two sets of zombiefied BarbiesHowever, I think we need to start a grassroots movement to have TWD producers include it in an episode. Wouldn’t that be freakin’ awesome? I can just see a walker staggering through the remains of Barbie Beach and picking up a naked, dirty Barbie and staring at it for a moment before shambling on, the doll still clutched in its hand. It wouldn’t be hard – plenty of scenes have already been filmed in the area surrounding Turin. What’s one more?

So, are you with me? Let’s see if we can get the walkers to storm the shores of Barbie Beach! (Cue crowd. A low chant begins, slowly building in volume… Bar-bie Beach! Bar-BIE Beach! BAR-BIE BEACH!)
