Welcome to Woodbury

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn the world of The Walking Dead, Senoia, Georgia is best known as Woodbury, home of the nefarious Governor and his subjects. In spite of its proximity to Atlanta and its popularity as a filming location, Senoia has not lost touch with its small town roots; it virtually oozes Southern charm. Nevertheless, signs of the apocalypse are everywhere. Literally.

A sign at the end of Main Street indicates the dates when it will next be closed for filming. The requisite tourist-y gift shops offer plenty of zombie-themed apparel and tchotchkes. One of the most popular stores is The Woodbury Shoppe, Apocalyptic Provisioner. This store carries licensed Walking Dead merchandise with an emphasis on apparel, but there were action figures, messenger bags and assorted other items as well. However, the one item that I really, really wanted was nowhere to be found. Trust me; I scoured every shop in town. The windows of our Toyota Highlander bear numerous decals detailing our travels and I really wanted to add a “Woodbury” sticker to the collection. If someone were to produce these, they would probably sell like hotcakes! So, if you know of a source, please, please, please let me know!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI don’t know if you have ever noticed, but in the scenes of Woodbury, there are flags on the light poles that say “Woodbury Georgia.” Senoia has flags as well (see picture). I find it absolutely hysterical that the town that is best known for a show about zombies has the motto “The perfect setting. For life.” BWAHAHA! It cracks me up every time.

One of the coolest things we found in Senoia had absolutely nothing to do with walkers. Maguire’s Family and Friends is an Irish pub located on Main Street. Well, actually it is located below Main Street. Yes, the pub is actually underground, tucked neatly beneath the bustling shops above. I love brick, stone, copper and wood and Maguire’s has them all in spades making for an extremely cozy atmosphere.  Although we stuck to the Irish fare, the menu is varied enough to suit most tastes and the portions were huge! It’s definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area. Oh, and according to our server, TWD cast and crew have eaten there on at least one occasion.

One of the best parts of our trip wasn’t even on The Map, but I’m not giving any spoilers. You’ll just have to come back tomorrow to find out what I’m talking about. I promise it will be worth the wait.
